Drift

This project was to create a one minute long film, with the content created from the word ‘drift.’ My group decided to produce the short film about a man who witnesses a murder and whose mind drifts from reality to memory of the event as he relives it. The original idea for the film was created by myself and Aaron, and elaborated upon by the rest of the team.

Pre-Production:

First, we created a storyboard to map out our shots and plot.

We then produced a shooting script to give a clearer idea of the filming process. This was followed by a script which I edited to ensure that it was clear and cohesive.

SCENE 1

(The camera follows the KILLER as he enters the tunnel. His target turns and notices him, then he fires a gun from inside the pocket of his jacket, the bullet hits his target walking in the tunnel)

(JOHN witnesses the murder at the end of the tunnel, as he was walking inside)

(KILLER runs past John and clips his shoulder, then proceeds to exit the tunnel in quick haste)

(JOHN is unaffected by this as he is fixed to the sight of the dead body)

SCENE 2
(JOHN is in a black space symbolising his mind, reacting in horror to what he has witnessed)

THERAPIST: “John.”

(Still in the black space, JOHN reacts, hearing the THERAPIST and turns as his attention is drawn)

(Camera now shows that JOHN is sat in a therapists office and his mind had drifted back to the day of the shooting)

THERAPIST: “John.”

(JOHN turns to face the THERAPIST)
THERAPIST: “You’re drifting again.”
END
Following the scripts, we scouted our location and completed a recce assessing it for filming.

Finally, we completed a production schedule which allowed us to plan what we would do each day in order to create the film.

Production:

Over the course of three and a half days, the group filmed all shots, with each of the four members of the team attempting camera work. I, along with filming some of the shots, acted briefly as the therapist and directed at times. The main issue that we faced was that of the public, as filming in the location we chose meant a lot of footfall. However, we successfully finished filming despite this. I enjoyed directing the most, as I had an idea of how the project should look, and through the directing that I did I was able to achieve what I had imagined in those shots.

Post-Production:

The editing was interesting to watch, as the project came to life with the help of visual and audio effects. It added another layer of interest to the film and brought the vision that myself and Aaron had proposed to reality.
